Lesson 3 - Employers and Employees

Recruitment is a process we all had to go through before getting a job. Even though this process is not always very pleasant, it is necessary for the employer and usually brings valuable experience to the candidates.

Not only in different countries, but even in different companies different conventions apply to the process of job application and interview. Usually it is common to submit a CV (curriculum vitae – British English), or a résumé (American English). It is increasingly common (if not required) to enclose a cover letter or a motivational letter, which shortly describes your motivation and reasons for applying for the job position.

Many companies expect all the personal information to be entered on the standard application form. These applications vary from company to company, and filling in each one may present unexpected difficulties.

Therefore, some personnel departments believe that the CV and application letter give a better impression of a candidate than a form.

In different countries there are different perks; the salary that goes with the job may be only a part of the package: extra benefits like a company car, phone or laptop, bonuses paid (or 13th salary), company pension schemes, holidays, or flexible working hours may all contribute to the attractiveness of the job.

Objectives of the Lesson

  • - to practice the usage of appropriate language in various situations connected with recruitment and employment
  • - to learn new vocabulary connected with recruitment, situation of employers and employees
  • - Special attention is paid to recruitment, looking for employees, advertising, selection procedures, interviews, the application procedure, cover letters and curriculum vitae/resume, salary, benefits, compensations, and problems at work
  • - to use and deepen the knowledge of reported speech
  • - to use and revise new and already known vocabulary and phrases

Read the following text about recruitment and connected topics.

2.1.Recruitment

The best definition for recruitment is: the process of finding people for a particular job. In American English it is called hiring. Someone who has been recruited is a recruit or a hire, respectively. When they join the company, we say that the company employs/hires them.

Now, we will look at the recruitment process from various points of view. From the point of view of the employer it is very important to know the language and vocabulary needed when:

  • - looking for an employee and advertising the position
  • - understanding the selection procedure
  • - inviting the candidate to the interview
  • - talking to an applicant
  • - giving/requesting a reference
  • - making an offer of employment
  • - rejecting a job candidate

On the other hand, for somebody who is considering changing the position, or is looking for a new job, it is very useful to be familiar with the language used when:

  • - applying for a job
  • - having a job interview
  • - preparing and creating a cover letter, a CV/resume.

For both categories it is also very useful to learn useful phrases in order to be able to:

  • - talk about salary and benefits
  • - talk about problems at work and solving work conflicts

2.2. Looking for an Employee and Advertising the Position

When a company is looking for a new employee, there are always more options.

It may recruit directly or indirectly. Indirect recruitment means that the company is using outside recruiters, employment/recruitment agencies. Sometimes the term headhunters is used, which denotes an outside specialist who ‚hunts‘ people for very important jobs, persuading them to leave the position they already have and the company they already work for. This is called headhunting.

The most common way of looking for an employee is posting a job advertisement in various media. These days the Internet is the most common. It is the most convenient way not only for companies, but also for jobseekers. The more traditional way is posting a job advertisement in the newspapers.

When advertising in any medium, these facts should be mentioned:

  • - description of offered position
  • - type of job (full-time, part time, …)
  • - employee requirements (necessary qualification, education, experience, etc.)
  • - special/additional employee requirements (languages spoken, traveling, etc.)

Some facts may or may not be mentioned depending on the company preference and politics, such as salary offered, promotion opportunities, benefits for future employees, starting date, etc.

Consider these examples of advertisements:

a) Assistant marketing Manager

We are a well-known international manufacturer based in the USA, Oklahoma, and we are expanding our export marketing activities in our European headquarters in Paris.

We are looking for an intelligent and lively person to join our team as soon as possible.

The work will involve working in our Paris office, telephoning and corresponding with our overseas clients and agents, and some travel, mainly to European countries. Applicants should be fluent in at least one foreign language. Experience in marketing would be an asset but not essential.

The successful applicant will be paid top Paris rates and provided with generous removal expenses.

b) LANGmasters

Be an important part of our winning team! We are presently seeking experienced sales professionals who are:

  • - dynamic
  • - dedicated
  • - professional
  • - energetic

c) Marketing manager

Successful candidate will develop an executive overall marketing strategy, work with key accounts and take hands-on responsibility for small profit centre. Qualified candidates must have 5+ years‘ sales/marketing experience dealing with this kind of market. BA degree in marketing and familiarity with language book‘s market a plus.

Note

Situation, post, position – these are very common formal words used in job advertisement and in applications.

Exercise 1: Now, choose the style of the advert that suits you best and write a similar short advertisement. Don‘t forget to mention as many facts as possible (job description, location, benefits, salary…). Use words that are in bold in the advertisements above.

2.3. Understanding the Selection Procedure

Pierre Lescq is a head of recruitment at a French telecom company. He talks about the methods that the company uses to recruit people – so called a selection process:

”We advertise in national newspapers. The applicants usually send us their CVs and cover letters, explaining why they want the job and why they are the suitable for it. But sometimes it is possible to apply for a job by filling the application form, this depends on the offered position. We look at the background of applicants: their educational qualifications and the experience of different jobs. Here we select for the
